Mary Baker Eddy mentioned them

MBE Mentioned Them

Inspired by the book, Mary Baker Eddy Mentioned Them, from The Christian Science Publishing Society

Mary Baker Eddy mentioned over 180 individuals in her published writings, many of whom are well known today, and others less so––Ptolemy, Jahr, Polycarp, Louis Agassiz, Florence Nightingale ... and many more! From mathematicians and astronomers to historians and philanthropists, Christian Scientists from a wide range of backgrounds and experience share some historical facts, some thoughts of their own, and of course what Mary Baker Eddy said about these people.

This conference was given at the Hotel Warwick in Geneva on 8 October 2020. We propose you to listen to a recording of it.

Christian Science - a clearer view of yourself

The speaker :

Lyle Young, CSB, Ottawa, Canada

Lyle Young learned about Christian Science as a university student through a Christian Science Organization on campus. Aware of the world's need for healing, eager to participate in developing solutions to humanity's challenges, and feeling that Christian Science offered the spiritual tools to be able to pray effectively and find answers, Mr. Young began using a newspaper each week to pray about the problems described in the articles it contained. Very quickly, he realised that doing this only once a week was far from enough! He first booked two, then three nights a week to pray for others and for the world. Eventually he gave up his university studies to dedicate himself full time to helping others through prayer as a Christian Science practitioner.

In addition to his public ministry of healing, Lyle Young is also a licensed Christian Science teacher to help others to reliably practice this healing system as well. He has served The Church of Christ, Scientist (The Mother Church) in many ways, including the following: as a Publications Committee for Canada, linking with legislative bodies and the media; as the First Reader of The Mother Church, conducting many weekly church services in English and Spanish; as a member of the Christian Science Conference Council, giving lectures and workshops in 34 different countries; as a member of the Christian Science Board of Directors, the Church's management board; as Secretary of The Mother Church; and by frequent contributions to the magazines published by the Christian Science Publishing Society.

It is a broad and deep love that motivates Mr. Young: a love for God, a love of the ideas contained in the Bible and in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and a love for all mankind. This love and affection for humanity is expressed through a keen interest in different cultures, languages, history, the arts and sports. Mr. Young runs and swims regularly, and bikes in all weathers. The latter activity is also linked to his commitment to the environment.

Lyle Young lives in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Having served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Ontario Interfaith Council on Spiritual and Religious Care for five years, he is familiar with a wide variety of expressions of faith, both Christian and non-Christian.

The Conference: Christian Science - A Clearer Vision of Ourselves

Who are we really? You and me, and all of humanity? the health, harmony, and joy we experience in life depend on our answer to this question. To the extent that we accept our identity as purely spiritual - knowing that each of us shines, now and forever, as a unique expression of the Innate Love - we experience healing. The result is well-being, opportunity, spiritual progress, and the highest sense of joy.

Subject: How spiritual perception brings healing

Alexandre Fischer, CS, Paris, France

Mr. Fischer has always wanted to help people overcome injustices. This led to a career as an international attorney. “I loved the law,” he says. “I bought my first legal text book when I was 11 years old and that was my favourite bedtime reading! Naturally, I became a lawyer, specializing in litigation.”

But after a few years, Alex felt something was lacking—a spiritual dimension to his work. He recalls one day, while working on an employment abuse case, his client was in tears on the phone. So, he told her that he would win a large payment for her. But, of course, that kind of reassurance could not stop her tears. What really needed to be dealt with was her anger and hurt feelings over the disrespect and poor treatment she’d received. But, as a lawyer, he had no way to deal with those things.

Knowing something of Christian Science as a prayerful approach to finding solutions, Alex realised it could have helped the woman to deal with her situation and mental anguish, to feel complete peace. A few years later, he exchanged his law profession for that of Christian Science practitioner in order to do just that: to pray with people to perceive God better as all-loving, and feel more of God’s divine love in their lives. He loves praying with people and seeing problems harmoniously resolved in this manner.

Christian Science follows the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Bible, and explained in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the Christian Science movement. Alex’s talk will explore both the Bible and Science and Health to see how a fresh perception of God can be part of anyone’s life and bring healing. He will also share examples of healings from his own experience.

About the lecture: Health is a spiritual reality

Our society today offers many forms of health maintenance and therapies. The gym, the spa, exercise classes, diets, etc. occupy a great deal of thought and time. Of course, exercise is a wonderful way of having fun and enjoying free moments. But cultivating our spiritual understanding of God and His infinite creation can be of more significant help in our lives.

Let us learn more about what Jesus Christ knew and taught. We can find this wisdom in the Bible. The Discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, a Bible scholar and fervent Christian, helps us give a step beyond merely believing in Bible stories. We can see their value, their real teaching, and apply them in our daily lives in the modern world today.

The Christianity Jesus taught is vibrant and applicable to all ages. The book Science and health with Key to the Scriptures, written by Mary Baker Eddy, helps to understand what Jesus gave to the world. Spiritual searching is in advance of the times, it helps us to find that health can be maintained through the right understanding of God and can be spiritually maintained. Because health is a spiritual reality.
